The Legend Of Rinjani Mountain and his Myth

Long long ago not far from the Lembar harbour, there is a Taun Kingdom and ruled by a King, Datu Taun and his beautiful queen Dewi Mas.

The Kingdom is peaceful, safe, and rich. even the kingdom never have a trouble, King Taun is always sad, this because he is not having a child yet, the time went and gone they also getting older and more sad.

One day the king talk to his queen, discussing about the family problem. The trouble if they don't have a child. so King Taun say to his queen :

"Adinda kanda ingin menyampaikan permintaan, ijinkanlah kakanda mengambil istri seorang lagi. Mudah-mudahan dengan demikian kita akan dikaruniai anak yang akan menggantikan pemerintahan kelak"
"Dear My queen. I want to ask you something, can I get your permission to married for the second time. so we will have a son, in the future he will continued our glory and our kingdom!".

The queen give her permission, so the king propose a beautiful girl called Sunggar Tutul, the princess from Patih Aur (minister).

After that marriage the king is busy with his new wife. The king wisdom, turn unfair to his wife's. Because the bless of the God, Queen Dewi Mas is get pregnant. This news is shocking the new wife of the King, Sunggar Tutul. Being scared if the king turn out from her. With a tricky and evil, Sunggar Tutul stir up the king, and tell that the pregnant of Queen Dewi Mas because of a man called Lok Deos. The king get mad, so Queen Dewi Mas is unacceptable in the palace and thrown away to the Gili with some of the maid. they build a small village in that gili, Queen Dewi Mas is still with her strength trough day to day.

One day a ship nearing the Gili, from the far the Captain of the ship see a beautiful girl (the queen) in that island. they come to Queen Dewi Mas village. After they eat and drink to coverage they strength, the Captain ask why Dewi Mas is living in the island that no other people live here before, so the Queen tell all the story of her life. The Queen ask the captain for help, to accompanied her to Bali Island. Finally the Queen and her maid is living in Bali and made a new village.

The birth day is come, Dewi Mas have a twins baby. One boy and the another girl, she give the boy name with Raden Nuna Putra Janjak (who's born with a keris) and the girl name with Dewi Rinjani (who's born with an child arrow). Both of the baby grow up, funny and cute. but one day, both of the child ask about their father, because they always been ridicule by their friend for not having a father. The push from both of her child make Dewi Mas tell about their father, that he is a king, and all the story inside. Raden Nuna Putra Janjak is getting mad of his father and ask for permission to see him in Lombok and so Dewi Mas give him a permission to sail and go seeing his father.

By the time he arrive in the Palace, Raden Nuna is stopped by the guard. the fight seems can't be stop. even Raden Nuna still a child but with the keris from his birth he become strong and no one can defeat him, so the king have to fight him, the fight is more difficult to predict. in the middle of the fight suddenly there is a voice says :

""Hai Danu taun, jangan kau aniaya anak itu. Anak itu adalah anak kandungmu sendiri dari istrimu Dewi Mas"."
"Hey King Taun, don't ever you hurt that child, cause the child is your own blood from your wife Dewi Mas"

After hear that sound, he feel sorry and hug Raden Nuna. after hear the story from Raden Nuna. so he go to the Bali Island and hope he can pick her up. all the people from the Taun Kingdom is happy cause the Queen Dewi Mas is not put an animus inside her heart with Sunggar Tutul, and they life happily ever and after.

Raden Nuna Putra Janjak grow up and more wise. so King Taun give him his crown to his son. after the son get the crown he go to the mountain with Dewi Rinjani. in the top of the mountain the pray for the God. in this top of the mountain Dewi Rinjani announced by the spirit of the mountain to become a queen. and after that this mountain called Rinjani.

CURSED SWORD, KERIS
In Indonesian people's life, keris has been a precious traditional sword. It can be identified with its special shape.

The king of Kediri Kingdom in East Java, Kertajaya thought himself as a deity, and he was opposed by the Brahmana (priests) caste. When he threated the Brahmanas, they ran to Tumapel and asked the ruler, Ken Arok, for his protection. Ken Arok thought that Kediri army would attack his territory, and ordered his troops to fortify.
Kediri army came to Tumapel as Arok was expecting. The Battle of Ganter, in 1222, was the end of Kediri Kingdom, then Ken Arok formed his own empire, Singosari.

Ken Arok proclaimed himself as the son of Shiva.
Historians has been argued on Ken Arok's new dynasty because his origin wasn't clear . Who is he? Why he could forma kingdom? Does he have a dark past?

After Kertajaya lost, the Kediri Kingdom was ruled by Tunggul Ametung.
He had a very beautiful wife, Ken Dedes. A statue in Leiden Museum, Netherlands, shows Ken Dedes as Prajnaparamitha, Goddess of Wise.
One day Ken Arok accidentaly saw Ken Dedes, then a wind hiked her gown. Suddenly Ken Arok got a vision, that he had to have Ken Dedes as his wife, at any risk.
Ken Arok decided to kill Tunggul Ametung.
He ordered a "keris" (a sacred short sword) to a priest, Mpu Gandring. It took a long time to make a "keris" because only englighted priest could make it, and they had to do some rituals for that.
Ken Arok was impatient to wait the keris to be done. His lust to Ken Dedes is getting bigger and bigger. He came up to Mpu Gandring to ask if the keris was completed. When Mpu Gandrig said no, Ken Arok kill him with that incompleted keris.
Before he died, Mpu Gandring cursed the keris.

Later, Ken Arok lent the keris to Kebo Ijo, a petty criminal Kebo Ijo was so proud. that he showed the keris to everyone. At night, Ken Arok stole the keris again, and he succesfully kill Tunggul Ametung. Kebo Ijo was framed as the killer, but before he could talk, Ken Arok killed him with the keris.

In the 5th year of his reign, a man called Anusapati wanted the throne of Singosari from Ken Arok. Ken Arok had abandoned Mpu Gandring's keris but Anusapati killed him with that.
Ken Arok had a concubine named Ken Umang, and their son, Tohjaya decided the revenge.
At the 21th year of Anusapati's rule, Tohjaya invited Anusapati for gambling, and when Anusapati was having fun, Tohjaya killed Anusapati, again with Mpu Gandring's keris.

After Anusapati's death, his son Ranggawuni wanted the throne.
Tohjaya sent Lembu Ampal to attack Ranggawuni and his companion, Mahesa Cempaka.
Lembu Ampal realized that Ranggawuni was the right person to be the king, and they fought against Tohjaya. Tohjaya was killed with Mpu Gandring's keris.

Ranggawuni and Mahesa Cempaka realized that Mpu Gandring's keris would only make chaos and death, so they threw the keris to the Java Sea.
Legend said that the keris turned to be a dragon.

Roro Junggrang

Loro Jonggrang

Once upon a time, there was a kingdom named Prambanan. The people lived peacefully. However, their happy lives was disturbed by Pengging Kingdom. The king, Bandung Bandawasa, wanted to occupy Prambanan. He was a mean King.
The war between Prambanan and Pengging could not be avoided. Prambanan lost the war and led by the new king, Bandung Bandawasa.
Pengging could win the war because Bandung Bandawasa had supernatural power. His soldiers were not only human being but also genies. Those creatures always obeyed Bandung Bandawasa. They always did whatever Bandung Bandawasa asked them to do.
The king of Prambanan had a beautiful daughter. Her name was Loro Jonggrang. Bandung Bandawasa fell in love and wanted to marry her. “If you want to marry me, you have to build a thousand of temples in just one night,” said Loro Jonggrang. She hated Bandung Bandawasa because he made the people of Prambanan suffered.
“What ? Impossible! You just gave me an excuse for not marrying me!” said Bandung Bandawasa. But he didn’t give up. He asked the genies to help him.
Then all those genies worked hard to build the 1000 temples. Meanwhile, Loro Jonggrang heard from the lady-in-waiting that the building of 1000 temples was almost finished. She was so scared; she didn’t want to marry Bandung Bandawasa. And then she had a great idea. She asked all the ladies-in-waiting to help her.
“Please prepare a lot of straw and mortar. Come on! Hurry up!” said Loro Jonggrang. All those ladies-in-waiting were confused. They didn’t know why Loro Jonggrang asked them prepare a lot of straw and mortatrs in the middle of the night.
“Listen, all those genies are building the temples, right? We have to stop them by burning the straw and make a noise by pounding the mortars. The genies will think that the sun is going to rise and they will run away. Genies are afraid of sunlight.”
It worked! All those genies thought that sun rose. They didn’t know the light was from the fire that burning the straw. And the noises from pounding the mortars like start of a new day.
Bandung Bandawasa was angry. He knew Loro Jonggrang just tricked him. “You can’t fool me, Loro Jonggrang. I already have 999 temples. I just need one more temple. Now, I will make you the one- thousandth temple.”
With his supernatural power, Bandung Bandawasa made Loro Jonggrang a temple. Until now, the temple is still standing in Prambanan area, Central Java. And the temple is named Loro Jonggrang temple.

Once upon a time in Lombok, there was a kingdom named Kuripan. The king of Kuripan was very wise. He had a daughter named Mandalika. She was so beautiful. Many princes wanted to marry her. To choose the one that would be his son-in-law, the king had an arrow shooting competition. The best one would be Mandalika’s husband.
On the day of the compettion, those princes shot their arrows. All of them did it perfectly. The king found it difficult to choose. Therefore, the princes began to fight and kill each other.
Princess Mandalika was so desperate. She didn’t want anyone killing each other because of her. That’s why she decided to go to the sea. She died in the south sea of Lombok. The king and the princes were sad and felt guilty. They regretted and stopped fighting.
Until now, one day in every year usually in February or March, people go to the south sea. On that day, a great number of worms come out from the sea. People call those worms nyale. People believe that those nyales are Princess Mandalika’s hair.

The two-story store building, next to the post office, is over a hundred years old. It is very tall for a two-story building and has a steep, peaked slate roof. Slate is very heavy, very strong and protects the building from rain and wind. It probably accounts for why the old building is still standing strong.

Long ago, before automobiles had been invented people came to town to shop or go to the bank or post office in buggies or wagons drawn by horses. The horses had to be tied to a hitching post so that they didn't wander around while their owner shopped. A long hitching post and rail was built along side the street next to the long side of the store building.

One winter there came a deep snow, maybe as much as 8 or 9 inches. The snow piled up high on the steep roof of all the buildings in town, including the tall store. People needed to shop or go to the bank but horses could come through snow even that deep. Several wagons parked alongside the hitching post and the horses were tied to the rail waiting there for their owners to return. It had turned quite warm, the sun had come out. Heat from inside the store and the sun on the outside heated up the slates on the roof and melted the underside of the snow. Then, all of a sudden, all the roof snow slid off the slates, just like an avalanche, and dropped down right on top of the horses tied to the hitching rail. Snow can be very heavy and there was lots of snow on that roof. It was a terrible accident. All of the horses were frightened. They tried to break free. Two of the horses were killed, several of them were knocked down and some had legs broken. The buggies were badly crushed. People came running to help free the horses and treat them if they could. The accident story was soon in the newspaper. People quickly learned not to ever tie their horses to the hitching rail next to the tall building if it had snowed and it was still on the store roof.

The second story of the store was built to be a large lodge hall. For years there was a KP painted on the front denoting Knights of Pythias Hall. Amesville had three lodge halls where people, mostly men, most of the time, could get together to learn, to socialize, to discuss issues of the day and to promote the welfare of the community. A far greater sense of community than exists now.

Doing the family laundry was once an all day, once a week job. To dry the clothes, they were hung with clothespins outdoors on lines for the sun and wind to take out the water. Women took great pride in keeping their homes, their children and their clothes clean. A line full of clean, sparkling clothes was evidence of a good housekeeper, homemaker living there. Washday on Monday was so traditional it became enshrined even in nursery rhymes. Some people made judgments about a woman's skill in housekeeping by what they saw on the clothesline and getting the clothes out early in the morning earned high praise.

The homemaker who lived at Harrison Drive took every opportunity to boast of "having my wash hanging out on the line before any other woman in Amesville". People were mystified how she could get the wash water heated on the stove, collect the clothes, wash and rinse them and get them out almost at daybreak. And then, quite by accident someone visited her on Sunday evening and discovered that she had taken one load of clothes and dipped them into a bucket of water to have them "wet" to hang out at day break--but they hadn't been "washed" at all. Later in the morning she would take them down and really wash them and hang them to dry a second time. And of course this story quickly made the rounds in Amesville and later, after her death, it became a way of describing a rushed, half-done job, "like Mrs. Crawford's early wash."

Behind the big store building was a small, one-story building with very thick walls and a very thick door. It was the Amesville Ice House. Manufactured ice would be brought by wagon and then by truck from the "ice factory” in Glouster and be stored in the Amesville ice house. The sawdust insulation between the double walls did such a good job the ice could last as long as two weeks, even in summer. People would come and buy 25 or 50 pounds to take home to their ice boxes. The engineer of the train that ran through Amesville would blow the whistle as it came down the valley in time for the store owner to load a 100 pound block of ice onto a little wagon and take it to the train station just as the train pulled in. It was a standing order. It was never explained to me why the train didn't take on ice in Glouster where the ice factory was--perhaps that train didn't come from Glouster?

Affluent people who lived in the country usually had a pond from which they "cut ice" in the winter time and stored it in their own ice house. But most people depended on the factory ice, available 12 months of the year from the little Amesville ice house. I tried to save the building. I thought it was historic but the floor had rotted out and it had been used for junk storage. I couldn't get anybody else interested in saving that little building that I thought children should know about. Ice was so important in lowering fevers and keeping milk and meat from spoiling. It was almost never put in a glass of drinking water. The only thing I could save were the giant hinges that supported the very heavy, thick door. The hinges are on the gate in the privacy fence that I had put at the west side of my house on Harrison Street.

The King, who loved his son above everything was so furious that his son had hurt himself that he rejected his wife. Fifteen years later, being of age, Sangkuriang asked his father permission to take a trip to West Java. After arriving in the plain of Bandung, he met a beautiful lady, fell in love and ask her to marry him and she accepted. But one day when she caressed her lover’s head she saw the wound. The loving woman, turned out to be the disowned queen, discovered that she was in love with her son and marriage was impossible.

The marriage had to be prevented. Not willing to admit that she was his mother she thought of a way out. The day before the wedding was due to take place, she said to her husband to be, tomorrow is our wedding day, and if you are true to your love to me and love me as much you say do then I want to celebrate the wedding on board a ship, a proa. Tomorrow morning at day break, I want to sail with you on a great lake in a nice boat and there must be a banquet feast. Sangkuriang was embarrassed but he was not willing to refuse. He begged the help of the lake’s helpful spirits. By causing a landslide, the lake spirit dammed the river Citarum that flowed through the plain of Bandung. The force of the water felled big tree and a boat was constructed while other lake spirits prepared the wedding banquet.

Early in the morning the Queen saw that the impossible had been realised so she prayed to Brama, the mighty God, to help her to prevent the disgrace of a marriage between a mother and her son. Brama destroyed the dam in turbulence and Sangkuriang was drowned. The queen in her agony threw herself on the capsized boat, breaking through the hull of the ship and was also drowned.

Now, the vast plain of Bandung is flanked on its north side by the volcano Tangkuban Perahu, the capsized boat. The Queen’s jump on the hull of the ship is the Kawah Ratu, the crater of the Queen. The hot fumaroles and tremors in the crater represent the tears of the sad mother still sobbing. East of Mt Tangkuban Perahu rises the Bukit Tunggul, trunk mountain, the trunk of the tree from which the boat was made and to the west we find Mt Burangrang, the “crown of leaves”. At many places along the shore of the lake Neolithic obsidian tools of primitive inhabitants are found and described by von Koeningswald (1935). These Neolithic people noticed that the hold was cut deeper and deeper by erosion caused by the lowering water. Finally only a marshy plain remained.

Centuries later the inhabitants of Bandung plain still know about the legend of the existence of a former lake. Not knowing anything about geology, but living in the taboos of spirit ghosts and Gods, geological facts were put together in a tale that was understandable.
